Did the 4.0 L come out with a transmission without overdrive? I'm thinking of getting rid of my overdrive because it is cheaper to rebuild the transmissions.
Just guessing but I think that a C5 transmission out of an early Ranger would probably bolt up to the engine.
Really though the A4LD isnt a bad transmission after updates are done on it.
Hopefully someone here will have some more insight into it.
Opera House Works do you have any good ideas?
It is often very easy and cheap to fix. When you remove the bellhousing, the OD clutch and planetary gear are the first two assemblies. Planetaries are only about $50 and the OD star washer is $8. If it is just a daily driver, you could replace these parts in about an hour with no special tools and leave the rest of the transmission alone. Except for the low/reverse servo which is always bad to some degree and only requires the removal of four bolts. That seems easier than adapting another transmission. The A4LD is not a great transmission but they are easy and very cheap to work on. Basic gasket kit is $30 and manual $16.
