I have a 78 ford f150 4x4 with a c6 and np205 t-case.sometimes when i first start to drive my truck for the day or if it has been sitting for a couple hours or so, its slow to engage in drive, but works fine in reverse and manually shifting it from 1st to 2nd. when i check the dipstick one side is where it should be and the other side is showing its overfilled like crazy. i used advance auto fluid and im thinkin of getting something alittle bit better, and adding a transgo shift kit and maybe a stage 2 kit. has anyone had a similiar problem with their trans.
Use the good side of the dipstick L.O.L., just kidding. I had my c/6 do that after it had been sitting on the floor of the shop for 5 years. I got some transmission cleaner from the local NAPA parts dealer and dumped a qt. in .replaced the modulator valve on the rear of the trany. and it has been working good this summer. If you don't have a NAPA store, just ask the ones you have what they have. I figured , what the heck, it's rebuild it now or take the chance and rebuild it later. so far it's later.
This is a common problem on high-mileage C6's. It happens because the forward clutch seals shrink over time and the clutch loses its prime when the transmission sits overnight. The reason it takes time for the gears to engage the next day is because the clutch has to re-prime itself. It's not a deal breaker, as long as you don't mind waiting for your gears in the morning. It will slowly take longer over time. The only way to fix this is with a rebuild.
Good to know. I have over 200,000 miles on mine and a new towing built 400m and I have towed my 3800 lb camper up a pass twice and it works fine once its warmed up, but like you say it acts like its stalling high when its cold. Doesn't do it warm. I am gonna do a rebuild eventually, but gonna change the fluid and put in a quart of lucas tranny fluid to see if that helps.
alright i plan on rebuilding it here pretty soon, i just need it to last me till i get my other truck going. has anyone rebuilt their c-6 before, how hard is it?
I have been told that the C4 is one of the easiest to rebuild, and the C6 is suppose to be pretty easy too. I would get a video from a qualified company on how to do it. Also don't buy a el cheapo rebuild kit. Get one for towing that uses good clutches. Also have a clean work bench to do it on and stack the parts so you know how they go back in, but the video should show this. I would like to do another tranny someday. I have helped a friend do one once. Shouldn't need any special tools for these ones either.
ya when i plan on rebuilding it, i'am going to use transgo stuff stage 2 kit, shift kit, new torque converter and any heavy duty upgrades i can get for it.
what manufacturer should you get the rebuild kit from if you are going to get a good one? and where does one find a video on how to this kind of thing?
so the master kit from napa would have everything in it to fix drive being out of your transmission? i think it was like $135 or something which isnt to bad. if its something that i can do at home
Hughes makes a kit, and check out broader performance for a rebuild kit. He is one of the best, and knows what to use. I'll find a video and post a link. http://www.c6-c4.com/ #39 is rebuild videos.
