turing a 4x2 into a 4x4

Ok, I know this has been asked MILLIONS of times....but here we go

I have a 1991 Crew Cab Long bed 4x4 with a 351w and I want a diesel 4x4. I already have the good axles, lift and rims and tires....but I am looking for longevity, mpg, and towing power so I want a diesel.

The body and interior on my truck is pretty wasted, and I have been looking and can pick up a nice 4x2 crew cab diesel for around 5k.

My question is....will my transfer case be a direct swap onto the back of the diesel trans? I know the axles and lift should be fine.

Can I buy any 4x2 between 91 and 96? or are there other year ranges where I can do an easy swap as well?

I am looking to do a quick changeover when I get the truck, so I dont want to do a bunch of fabbing or put in a cummins or anything crazy like that.

Any guidance would be great

You can`t bolt a transfer case on to a two wheel drive trans.
Up to 941/2 the diesels were the IDI engine, from`941/2 up they would have the electronically controlled Power Stroke diesel.

Well than that settles that! Maybe an easier route will be to buy a 4x4 diesel and just swap my axles, lift and rims and tires....Ill probably just go that route. Thanks for the help.

I've read articles in various magazines about this years before the internet even existed.
Similar conclusions were reached. It was always more trouble and expense than it was worth unless the vehicle never came with 4X4 in the first place. Then it was a novelty, like on a mini-truck. Many of them were unavailable in a 4X4 configuration in the early 70's.

I was just trying to get a gauge of what would be easier......a diesel swap into my truck, or a 4x4 swap into a diesel truck.....there are pros and cons to both.
