New Long Block Installation ??????

Does anyone know if there is a specific set of procedures to follow before you can start this 7.3. My first diesel motor R&R.

Welcome to FTE...I have not had to do this yet but there are some here that have.I reckon the basic items should be checked and then it should be ready to fire up.Oil full in the pan and HPOP,coolant full, tranny full, once over again that everything is tight and out of the way.
There will be more advise when others see this....Good luck

Maybe loosen a fuel line and cycle the key so you can purge some air.

I'd pull the either PCM or IDM fuse an crank it a few times for about 20 seconds waiting a minute or two between cranking. This will get oil through the HPOP and into the heads.

Welcome to FTE and congrats on getting it started.

Can you tell us what all went on to change the engine and more info like that?

Well when it rains it pours. New long block with blown head gasket. What are the odds.

We pulled the entire front clip off of the truck. The front tires, the grill, bumper, headlight assembly, even the crossbar that has the belt diagram on it, Radiator, Turbo Inner cooler, AC Condenser, Transmission inner cooler, and power steering cooler. We pulled the turbo off of the truck and the exhaust to turbo adapter. Undid the motor mounts, transmission bolts, starter, and disconnected all wiring to the engine. Then pulled the engine out of truck. Placed it on an engine stand and proceeded to remove the parts that would be placed on the new long block. Mostly bought new parts to go on the new long block. Used the same HPOP as it was still good. New glow plugs, Injectors, water pump, filters, internal wire loom, external wire loom. Replaced all O-Rings through out the fuel, oil, and ac lines new radiator and inner coolers. Re assembled the new long block with the new parts and original HPOP. Installed the new engine. 28 straight hours from new long block on engine stand to running truck. The trickiest parts for our installation would be getting the transmission to line up correctly(1.5 Hr) and getting the damn turbo to align with the exhaust adapter properly(2.5 Hr). Everything else went rather quickly with no complications, till the head gasket decided to go on vacation with less than 150 miles on the new engine. needless to say no more money to spend on her for awhile.

How much did all this cost you (not including new head gaskets)?

The long block was 4500 shipping included. About 1500 for the rest of the parts would be my guess I have not added up all the receipts as off yet. The dealership wanted 10,000 with out all the new parts. So I just figured I would do it my self save some money and get some new parts for her.

I have been trying to post pictures of the rebuild. I cannot seem to figure out how to do it though.
