The Dana 60 3.73 swap is complete. I had one issue which I'd wish I'd noticed yesterday pulling the old Diff and prepping the doner...The Differential yoke. Seems that there are a bunch of yoke designs with the Dana 60's (I'm sure many of you are aware) throughout there run, and the original 4.56 had a 10 spline (1330) yoke with a narrower u-joint fitting and the '72 Camper Special doner had a 29 Spline (1350) and wider u-joint fitting.
The issue was easily solved with a conversion u-joint, but I had to run all over town. The truck runs superb, and smoothly. Finally, I can hear myself think in the cab instead of the engine running at high rpms at road speed. The other thing is that the gearing seems "right" now. It actually goes through all the gears evenly and when shifting from Park to Drive, it's smooth instead of a clunk. Loving it.
You have done well my son. You have earned the right to walk on the ancient burial grounds, (AKA wrecking yards) Go forth with wrench in hands, The junkyard dog is happy.
Good job.
I'd recommend looking at a 69-72 Camper Special...they seem to always have 3.73 gearing, or close to it...and there seem to be a lot of them in wrecking yards from my experience. Camper Specials in the 72 range will also have better drums than older ones.
I paid less than $200 for mine, and it runs great. Just remember that the differential yoke splines and design differ slightly than the pre-67's. Easily remedied by a conversion u-joint or yoke replacement. The Camper Specials were designed for relatively heavy hauling while giving the option of better road performance.
