worth the trouble?

Found a 84 F250 4X4, 351W with a 4 speed tranny. (A code transmission, 22 code axle)

Transmission is funky, most gears pop out when decelerating. Has what looks to be an aftermarket hydraulic clutch setup.

Front drive shaft has been removed because of bad u-joint (what could cause this) I see no reason to remove the shaft unless you are going to fix it right away...

Plenty of rust on the exterior of the bed and in the cab corners/sill plate.

Seller wants 750.

Plan is to remove body/engine and replace it with my 80 F150 body/300 straight six engine. Probably have to either rebuild tranny, or find another, biggest thing is I just want 4x4, the 3/4 ton part of it is a bonus addition.

do you guys/gals think it is worth the trouble? Seems to me the decent mud tires are worth the purchase price by them selves, but I am not sure if I am looking at this objectively.

Not worth the trouble. Many look, many don't even answer. I do.

Spend the 750 on the 1980. Then sell the 1980 and buy an orginal 4x4.

well i suppose there are a couple of different ways you could go about this.

first off, is he firm on the $750? the transmission and the lack of it being an actual functioning 4x4 is a bargaining chip for you. secondly, what kind of mud tires are coming with it? what size? how is the tread? i'm sure he's using the tires to pump up the price of the truck... so are they really worth it to you? is it a coil or leaf sprung front axle?

personally, i think it would be cheaper for you to just swap in 4x4 stuff to your 1980. the ttb d44 are a dime a dozen in the junkyard and can be head for far less then this truck. plus, the f-150 front axle is a bolt in affair. plus, if you plan on keeping the 300, you could locate a trans/case combo for sale on craigslist or the fte classifieds. or find a cheap parts truck/bronco and rip out what you want and junk the rest. as a general rule, i won't pay over $300 for a parts vehicle. you should consider things like transport, break down time, and removal costs to your bottom line. swapping a cab/bed/front clip/motor plus a trans rebuild is a lot of work. do you have the equipment for the swap over at your disposal? it's a lot to think about, but i think you may be better off leaving this truck to someone else.

Thanks for the replies. My truck is set up pretty good right now. I have 2.73 Non-LS in the back, and that makes going in the woods a bad idea. I was really wanting to do this because it would kill two birds with one stone. Give me 4 wheel drive and increase load capacity.

The old lady put the brakes on any chance of picking up the other truck, so I am going to have to find other cheaper ways to soup up my baby.

Trouble with getting stuff from a junk yard is it's just me. I move around a-lot and have very few friends, fewer still who are inclined to help pull an axle or 200Lb tranny/t-case combo.

I have a local junk yard that has a 80 f250 minus the tranny/transfer case, they want 450 for the whole truck (no wheels either) or 200 for both axles (100 each), being that I don't have the bolt in hardware for the suspension I would lean towards the whole truck, maybe if I leave the whole body, bed and engine they will lower the price (i.e. just take the frame and axles out of there and slowly fix it up for my body and engine swap...

The other trouble with the cheapest yard here is no jacks/jackstands allowed. How the hell are you supposed to get the big crap out of there? By yourself...?

Yeah, thanks for the thought. That is a bit of a drive... I'm sure my baby could tow that thing back, it would be one slow ride.

Well, I guess waiting a few days paid off.
I picked this up today for 150 bones.

I heard that 80-81 Supercabs were rare, is this true?

80-86 are more rare than the 87-96/97 super cabs just b/c of the sheer number of trucks produced... I've seen the 82-86 supers around here, but I can't say that I have ever seen the 80-81 supercabs???? hmmm... We have these kind of questions on the 87-96/97 forum all the time... I wish Ford had an online library with the production numbers all broken down for us... Even if it was the production numbers by plant... At least then we would have an actual idea of what is out there (less the lost treasures that have been crushed)...

Looks like you got a heck of a deal! Any more pics???? I have always favored the 80-81 years before they moved "Ford" down onto the grill... MORE PICS PLEASE!

What engine did that 80-81 super cab have??? 460??? 6.9L diesel???
