To recap the facts:
- HID elements produce far more light than incandescent.
- HID swaps into housings designed for incandescent bulbs are not technically legal in US, not sure in Canada.
- Many areas in US are not yet cracking down on conversions
- Unless e-code housing, extra glare will affect oncoming drivers
- 4300 K results in best visibility for human eyes, some folks think the blue-er look of light in the 6K+ range looks cool and will sacrifice function/visibility for it.
- Many folks don't give a rat's patootie about facts and physics.
Correct me if I am wrong; the DRL system illuminates the high beam bulb (in 2 bulb systems) or high beam filament (in single bulb systems) at half wattage to provide light visible in daylight without wearing out the bulb prematurely as running at full wattage would do.
If you were to change out to HID bulbs, the DRL system would not function. This is due to the design of HID lights. HID bulbs have no filament. Instead, they have a glass tube full of Xenon gas with an igniter. When the lights are switched on, the gas is ignited and thereby produces light. They will be the same brightness when they are on and warmed up and cannot operate any dimmer.
You could leave your high beams halogen to retain DRL, and replace your low beams and fog lights (driving lights) with the HID system.
