What year is it really?

All my paper work on the truck says 04. The dealer sold it as a 04 and the vin number has a 4 in the 10 spot. But two different mechanics plugged their computer in and it came up as a 05. Why is this? The first mechanic said it could be possible that before I bought it that it could have had a motor swap. Now its got me wondering. Does this motor have more or less miles then it says or did it just come from the factory with a 05 motor. My build date is 09/04 which both mechanics said that anything after August is the next build year. But it gets me to wondering why is it an 04 not a 05?

It's an 04. I also have a 2004 F150 Supercrew. Build date was 06/04, but are trucks are technically a Job2s. I have the same issue at auto part stores, my VIN doesn't show up as a 04, but as a 05 as well. But I am the original owner, so I'm sure you are good and your truck is a 04.

In the old days, yes, anything after August was the new model year, but nowadays, cars are launched throughout the year, so you can't go by that anymore. Depends on when the manufacturer launches their 1st model as a new model year.

I understand the concern and also just the curiosity in wanting to know but what are the differences between the 04's and 05's really. As far as I can tell these are the same truck just different years so most of the parts if not all should be interchangeable. I could be wrong I am certainly no expert on these trucks but that would be how I would look at it.

Yes, for the most part, they are the same, except for they changed the cams on the
5.4s so it's a differenet calibration ....

Typically September is when most manufactures would roll out their new models So a 9/04 build date would be listed as an 05 model. However that is not always the case any more. I've seen new models come out any time between June and January.

In the F-150's didn't Ford do a "mixed" production in 2004. Weren't they still making the old body style (labeled it a Heritage Model), at the same time they were building the newer style? Maybe that's the reason that your "new" style 04 is showing up as an 05. The parts definitely are not interchangeable between the two.
