Hello
i have a 97 f250 diesel with a 7.3 diesel . there is a transmission guy that i know said that the hard shifting and the od flashing light was the culprite for hardshifting . I bought a new soleniod body , filter etc. Does any one have any threads with pics , torque recommendations. Already got parts coming
IMHO....You need to remove and clean the sensor on the top of the rear differential housing before tearing into the trans. It's a RABS sensor but also acts as a VSS, it supplies a signal to the PSOM. If that signal gets messed up the trans will shift hard and the OD light will flash....your symtoms!
Good luck. It may or may not be the problem. If it got overheated then there could be a world of problems. The most common that I know of, correct me if wrong fellas, are the clutches slipping, torque converter going bad, or solenoid going out. It is very hard to diagnose that tranny. The OD light flashing isn't significant of a particular problem it is just significant of SOME problem. That flashing and the hard shifts are what is known as "limp mode" for the E4OD. I think Mark said it can go into limp mode if it detects so much as a 50 RPM slip. I'm not trying to discourage you, rather trying to give you a little more info in case it doesn't get better after the new solenoid. Gets expensive to change +-16 qts of ATF each time you gotta open that monster. There are others on here who know WAY more than me about it but I have a bitter history with the E4OD that educated me a LITTLE. Again, good luck
k pulled the sensor off rear differential. It seemed to be burnt on the metal. I did have a leak on the left seal. We replaced both seals recently. I had a axle out back that had the same sensor . Swapped it out . Truck is shifting fine now . I drove it for about 20 miles alternating slow and fast acceleration . Still no flashing od . Hopefully it will not go into default . Before i had a 1748 code . That is gone . There is a new code showing up. It is 1746 pressure control soleniod a open circuit . I am i fooled that it is shifting better and should expect limp mode again. If yes how long after driving would i go back in . Thx in advance
No the battery was connected. Prior to changing it I did pull the negative terminals to clear all the codes . I do have a computer > it works well but does not clear the computer . Runs much better after changing rear sensor.
The reason I asked is because when you clear the codes out it may run fine for a while and then will randomly start blinking again and shifting hard(unless you fixed the problem which may be the case). After mine started it for the first time I had the codes cleared and it ran well for a few weeks and started again. Cleared the codes and it ran well for a few miles. I'm assuming it runs well until it feels a slip. I'm just relaying my findings though since you still have a code. I don't know what it means but that's what happened with mine anyway.
Yap truck back in limp mode again. Was running great once i cleared the codes . Could it be a bad computer . I have an extra one off my totaled 96. IT keeps coming back to solenoid a on the codes . Harness outside transmission looks fine . Already bought the solenoid body , filter , and gasket thinking about just throwing it in . I am in the mood to taste tranny fluid. Looking for torque specs for the transmisson and a play by place picture on changing . I have been told it is fairly easy. Thx for spending time
If you decide to go after the solenoid pack, see if you can find a 4R100 pan to put on your trans- its a bolt on and has a drain plug in it. Makes the job of draining the fluid a bit easier.
Hello
Finally an update. pulled negative terminals off of the batteries. Went to remove harness to the solenoid body. All coroded and one broken pin. Order a new harness , a new solenoid body , filter etc. Took an hour and half this morning to do. Very easy . The truck shifs great . Thx
