Some of the guys will know better than I do, but part of the function of that oil cooler being in the rad is to help get the oil up to operating temperature in colder weather. I don't know what or how it would affect things without it. If you were in a warmer climate it may not be an issue, where you are, I don't know.

Im in cold country ie Fargo ND / Moorhead MN however the truck will not be used much if at all in the winter months.
If you don't pull a trailer or carry huge loads, I wouldn't hesitate to use it. Especially if you can find a second transmission cooler to put in line with the one you already have, plus maybe find a cheap deep tranny oil pan for extra, extra cooling.
I had an 85 F-250 with a 460/C6, I bypassed the rad/trans cooler and only used my A/C condenser which I converted to a transmission cooler. The transmission still reached the same operating temps it did before, it just took longer to reach them in the winter.
12,000 is onehelluva load on a IDI engine and transmission. I would find a copper radiator, OEM, and run TWO coolers, plus a deep aluminum pan. I pull a 6500 lbs camper, and that's what I did.
I really don't know how you do it with an engine rated at around 200 hp. My 6.9 is only rated 170 hp.
I'm actually surprised how easily 200hp will move 12k. I figure total weight(truck/trailer/load) on mine is about 20k at times and it moves pretty good. I laugh when I see all the dodge guys with 4-600hp to pull little trailers that weigh less than 6k.

Same here, but I did it on my IDI. Works fine, but then again my fan clutch is locked so it blows full speed all the time, which I'm sure helps a lot in an air-only cooling setup.
