Ignition
I was looking over the ignition wires, found one burnt, but also noticed the firing order was off. She has been running ok, but only getting around 6mpg with the VV carb.
Yeah, I know, I have a 2150, just no time to do the whole conversion.
Anyway, the firing order currently in the truck is 1 5 7 8 6 3 4 2.
My factory manual says it should be 1 3 7 2 6 5 4 8.
That would mean I currently have 5/3 and 8/2 reversed.
I tried the firing order from the manual and she was backfiring from the intake and exhaust. Put it back to the 15786342 order and she purrs. WTF?
Yes this is a DS III. I have a Mallory Unilite, but again, no time.
I know I could have done half the swap in the time it took me to type this post, but I don't want to start the swap and then run into a problem, so I want a few days to be sure. This truck is my DD and I cannot afford for it to be down.
Any ideas?
The 351w firing order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8
You will have one of the two firing orders above. You can have the 302 firing order by simply have a 302 cam in a 351w engine, nothing to panic over there.
Since you didn't list any known Ford firing order that your engine has now, I would suspect you made a mistake, possibly in the way you are numbering the engine cylinders. Passenger side front is 1, then 2, 3, 4. Driver's side front is 5, then 6, 7, 8.
I am sure of the numbering of the cylinders. I do have the factory manuals that have a little diagram of the engine as viewed from the front and the plug wires from there.
I am very sure of the current firing order. I am sure it is as I said, but that is what it is. That is why I am asking why this seems screwed.
I did try the 351W firing order and got a lot of backfiring through the carb and out the exhaust. That is why I am asking here why this truck seems screwed.
And once I do try to do the conversion, which firing order should I wire it for?
