2004 f-150....new member..looking for some input

so, I am making the move from the 6.0l diesel to the 5.4 liter f-150. Anything I need to know. Do you guys like these motors? Good year f-150? It has 85k miles on it and they are asking $19,900. Thanks for all your help fellas. Im glad to be part of the forum

tooooo much money!!!

the trucks and motors are good and strong. but almost 20k for a 7 year old truck with 85000 on it is crazy. a few thousand more and you can buy a new truck, with 0 miles, and a warranty. get them under 14,500 and buy it. imo

Agree with Dano I didn't spend much more on my truck when I bought it 2 years ago with 25k miles on it. As get in writing (if buying from a dealership) that the Cam Phasers have been replaced or they will replace them should something go wrong. The 04-05's had an issue with these. I would also request the plugs be changed out too. The 5.4's had a 2 piece plug design which is just a pain and expensive for some to replace them so I would let them do it before buying.

ya, it is at a dealership for sale. they are offering a 2 year FULL warranty, bumper to bumper, covers anything and everything. the truck is a one owner, in mint shape with all required maintence done and recorded. I will def. check on the plugs too, thanks man for the help. As far as a good leveling kit that wont hinder the steering or ride what do you suggest? i'll probably keep the stock wheels and just add bigger tires.

OK the leveling kit I recommend Ready Lift but most of the kits out now install as a strut extension so they don't affect the steering at all.

Yes I mean the spark plugs some people have paid upwards of $600 to have them replaced because the plugs break in the cinders and are a pain to remove.

The cam phasers making a ticking noise that starts off mild but over time becomes worse and annoying and can do some real harm to the engines.

Even with a 2yr warranty I still think the truck is over priced.

The price is high, how high depends on trim, options, etc. A little more info about the truck would be nice. Though if the truck is at least half ways decent I doubt you'd get it for better then $16,000, at least around here. Truck prices have been crazy for awhile now, heck my truck is still worth more then I paid for it 3 years ago.

P.s. Ideally you'd want to shoot for a 2006+ if you can, most of the bugs had been worked out by then.

thanks for the help fellas. Yeah it is a screw lariat, leather and paint is mint condition, sunroof, 6 disc cd changer, brand new tires. I will have them replace the spark plugs for me as well. Just talk to the dealer lastnight and looks like i can get it for $18k. I have checked high and low around my area and there are only two other comparable trucks, both over $18k.

I need to check to see if the cam phasers will be covered by this warranty. Other than the phasers and plugs, is there anything else engine or transmission wise i should keep an eye on? THanks again guys.

Not much else wrong with these trucks. They are pretty stout. In 04-05 there were some reports of bad injectors or something of that nature. Might be something to look into.

2 Fowl, Do what you have to do. I have found that trucks here in VA seem to carry a higher price tag than other localities. That doesn't mean that good deals cannot be found though. Good luck with your negotiations.

ya man, i am def. going to try and work with them alittle more. they have already agreed to place a 5 year bumper to bumper and drivetrain warranty on there as well and change the plugs before i purchase. Now the real question is how low i can get them.

I also went from a 6.0L to a 5.4L F150. The F150 is a little doggier in the hills, but I can pull my enclosed 7000LB. car hauler just fine down the highway at the speed limit and only get 1 mpg less towing than with the diesel. I get about 1/2 MPG better not towing than with the diesel. Much cheaper to maintain than the diesel. I do miss the tow-haul feature on the Torqushift tranny. Used prices are higher than when I bought my 06 XLT E/C 4X4 two and a half years ago. I paid $19K for a 2 year old lease return with 26K miles. In Indiana trucks like the 04 you are negotiating on are going in the $14-16K range. Last week there was an 08 Lariat S/Crew 4X4 in Warsaw, In listed for $20.4K with a 6.5 ft bed. If you could swing it, I'd go with an 08 or newer. The 08 and newer 5.4L has the updated heads that are easier to change plugs on and the 09 and newer have that sweet 6 speed automatic with tow-haul. Which ever way you go good luck.
