OK,... I have a 92 Bronco with about 200,000 miles on it,.. its been having fuel pump issues and the starter was getting ready to go out,.ie.slower turns and some grinding.... Replaced the fuel pump,... g/f gets pissed and takes off ,..tires squealing,..,..later find out that it broke down,...so I go over ,.. pull the starter and half the gear is broke off,.. and the bearings all jacked up. Replace the starter after fishing the gear out of the bell house. Turning it over ,.. plung sound,... couple more times and the new starter breaks ,...the whole nose cone breaks off as well as the gear,...what is binding the motor and breaking starters,....??? Starter off I turn the motor by hand friend watches flywheel for damage,...some but not enough to be a problem. but motor binds up while turning it forward,... runs all the way through winding it backwards. so i start heading for the valve covers ,.. to check for possible valve failure. None detected to this point,... rockers off to check timing chain issue... they all move.... this is where I am at,... tell me what you all think....
could be a piece of the broken starters still jamming the flywheel. It could be jamming one way and not the other if it is stuck in the housing and rolling up one way and laying down the other.
ok have it down to the oil pan off,...heads dtill on,.... as soon as the oil pump came off it stopped binding,....Ideas?,...Pan was full of sludge,.. could it have been siezed due to the sludge all up in it?????,.. gonna pull the main caps and rod caps to see what is going on there,..hit me back on this
Ok we pulling the whole thing and going through the motor,...I will be posting pics,... this evening.....I would love some input on the overhaul thing ,....anything that might be specific to the 351w motor,....or ford ,...thanks
there should be 6 bolts holding the motor to the tranny. 4 converter bolts to flexplate. of course the starter needs pulled along with the bolts holding the dust shield to the tranny.
motor mounts, rad lines, throttle linkage, exhaust y pipe, fuel lines behind intake. also pull upper intake off and tape off the lower intake so nothing falls in there. pull the fan off and you might pull the radiator out also if you want more room to work with. its
Well,...Yeah Yeah,...got it out,...just a little over thinking the entire thing,....The overhaul has commenced,.. and still no definative cause of the stopage in the motor. Is there a situation in the transmission that could cause the binding in the motor,...or something that I cant see with the eye,...??? We are replacing : Timing set, main and rod bearings, rings, lifters, oil pump, and the heads just got back from the shop,....all the internals were replaced with standard sizes,...anyone see anything that we forgot?? oh and its been a minute,...like never ,...since i have done an overhaul,...on a v8,..is it super difficult to rotate this thing while assembling the lower end,..we are as far as the pistons back in ,...??
well we just said **** IT and sent the lower end to the machine shop to put together for us,...no prob I am not equipped with the measurement stuff to do all the Micrometer work ,...so we will get it back tomorrow and start putting it back together,... I will be taking pics and will post all of them in a day or so,....
you should ask them to use ARP bolts on the bottem end. this is a crucial area on our fords that needs upgraded. I would also suggest you have them assemble the cam and heads also. trust me it will be extremely worth it. i just had my motor rebuilt and was going to do the build myself but started to think like you i didnt have the time or the proper tools. when they assemble the whole thing to a long block they are responsible and you have someone to go to if there are issues.
i would run a standard volume oil pump. of course new water pump and 195* Tstat. I also recommend running Delo 15-40 or 50 oil. its a hi detergent and will keep the motor clean. first oil change should be at 500 miles, 2nd can be at 1500 and again at 3000 miles with normal intervals after that.
