94 Explorer Codes - 226,212

I am at the point where I need some suggestions for a problem that has been bugging me for some time and has become a challenge. I have been getting an intermittent CEL with codes 226,212 since November 2009 on my V6 EDIS-6 4.0L OBD-1 Explorer. It seems to trigger the CEL most often when the engine rpm is greater than 1500. Also can trigger a CEL when the engine is cold after initial start. The engine runs very well, but the exhaust smells a bit rich at idle when cold. The tach's reaction to engine speed is smooth. The original ignition coil pack and original EDIS-6 module have been replaced. The engine is running smooth so I have not suspected an intermittent failure in the connection between the EDIS-6 module and the ignition coil pack. I have swapped the new and original EDIS-6 modules a couple of times. I have cleaned coil pack and EDIS-6 terminals including the wiring harness connecting terminals.

Because this problem is intermittent and the tach is smooth I have not suspected a fault in the main computer and the continuity of the wire (terminal 2) between the EDIS-6 module and the main computer. According to my electrical diagram the tach pickoff is just ahead of the main computer on the same wire from terminal #2 on the EDIS-6 module.

The most often suggested solution I have received is: Get some tape and tape over the Check Engine Light. Any and all suggestions will be greatly appreciated!!!

MY 2cents,

check for corroded or loose connections on cam and crank sensor circuits.

Unplug multi connector from PCM, spray with contact cleaner and reinstall...

Thanks for your response. I'll follow up with the PCM connector asap. I don't think it has a cam sensor because it is a push rod engine. The crank sensor was replaced within the past year. I haven't suspected the crank sensor connection, because the Ignition Diagnostic Monitor (IDM) signal is on a direct line from the ICM to the PCM. Where am I wrong on that assumption?
