How Much Power?

Hello,

I been reading the forums for a while and thought it was time to join and start posting.

A quick glance, I'm 22 and in college. I have a 1996 Ford F-250 extended cab Powerstroke.

I was wondering with the mods I have now, approximately what kind of power I could be layin down? I don't have any access to a dyno so I figured all the experts here would have a decent idea.

Mods are:

-Napa 6637 Air filter sittin on the front wheel well.
-TS 6 position chip (Generic). Its going to be upgraded with some custom tunes from PHP soon.
-4" straight exhaust with 3" DP
Dual Tranny coolers (I swear it doesn't go above 120 even the hottest of days sitting in traffic)

In the next year or so I would like to add some stage 1 injectors. But that is just a plan right now :/

What kind of hp/torque numbers am I looking at right now? Also when I add stage 1's?
Also I was wondering how big a difference custom tunes make?

Sorry for all the questions... I guess I just have a inquisitive mind. lol

Thanks!!

What hp tunes from ts do you have? Im kind of confused with what you mean by generic ts chip. Ts is considered custom tuning and offers probably the most added horsepower from their tunes(according to diesel power magazines test) just curious why you are switching to php.

I'd guess 250-275 right now and about 350 when you get stage ones

I'd say about 250 right now, with Stage I's and PHP tunes probably 325 ish.

Agreed, stage 1's, electric fuel, chip, and intercooler along with all your mods and you would be lookin at about 350.

I know bunch of people with OBS strokers and they are running custom tunes from PHP and TW and such and it really seems to make a huge difference. Most everyone Performance diesel enthusiast I personally know starts with TS but then moves to someone else custom (TW, PHP, DP or Gearhead). they were tellin me its a big difference for them. Plus reading these forums for a while I got the impression that TS chips were a "canned" program more or less.

The tunes from TS are:

Stock, High Idle, 50, 75, 100, 140

The electric fuel will have to wait for a little while... once the stage 1's go in I will be flat broke again. After I graduate I have plans of parking her for a while stripping her to the frame and re-doing it and making her as nice or nicer than when she was bought. When I do that and have an actual job I want to get a 17* HPOP and upgrade to stage 2's, intercooler, electric fuel and probably other things as well. I have a spare turbo so I thought I might use it when this happens to upgrade a d66 as well when I re-do the truck.

BTW forgot to mention the truck has 274K on her and still ticking strong

Make sure you address that transmission before you get into Stage II's and bigger turbo. Even with I's it won't last long and a good strong built E4OD runs between $3-5k

I would think that if you are planning on stage IIs then I would not waste my $$ on Is right now, that would be like buying injectors twice, why would you want to do that? use the money for supporting mods and just spring for the IIs when you are ready for them, as far as HP is concerned I put down 225 at the wheels, so that would probably put it somewhere around 255 or so at the crank and you can see the mods I have in my signature

This truck is on tranny #4... I think it actually has a problem with tranny's.... It likes to blow them every 8k-20k... and I mean BLOW them up. The first one actually blew up the TC and sent metal shards all through the tranny. Now the last 3 have been from FORD and are still under warranty. And FORD hasn't given hardly any hassle about replacing them as they go. Though I have become friends with the local FORD dealership mechanics because I been there so much for tranny.... haha. But the warranty still has 2 1/2 years left so I will stick with that until i can either save up enough to get a BTS or until the warranty runs out... whichever comes first. The warranty that came with the tranny was a 3year/100,000 mile warranty... and for $2200 with TC I thought that was a decent deal.

97,

I thought that if I bought the stage 1's now that rosewood could just upgrade them to stage 2's later by putting in the parts? (Forgive me but my expertise on injectors is lacking compared to my knowledge of other parts on the truck...)
If I am mistaken on that then I would consider holding off for a few years.

You are correct, stage 1's are 160cc injectors with stock nozzles. Stage 2's are the same injector with an 80% over stock nozzle. Thus, you will have to send them back to get rebuilt to stage 2's. And from what i understand, its not just a screw on and off nozzle, the entire injector will have to be torn down again, so it wont be too bad, just have to take them back out and send them to be built for the 2's later.

That's not to bad then... I understand there is a little extra money involved by upgrading as I go... But that is the price one must pay to play with these trucks. haha

Rosewoods website says the diy injector kits will be available in the fall that would save you some money if you feel like tackling the job yourself. You could buy the stage 2 kit but use your stock nozzles and when you have the supporting mods you want and are ready for stage 2s it wont cost you any extra. Im 22 also and just graduated college and always looking for ways to save money lol. Just be ready for extra costs when you get the valve covers off such as harnesses and glow plugs especially with 270k on the clock

Sounds like a plan on the rosewoods.... I'm pretty mechanically inclined so it wouldn't be too bad doing it myself... just read up on the injectors.

The truck has a fresh batch of glow plugs about 40k ago.... but I don't doubt the harnesses could need replaced.
