I have a 351 that I am going to be rebuilding. I was wondering if anyone knew off hand what they charge for a cylinder boreing. I want to go .030 over.
Does anyone have any reviews of Hackl's in Prince Albert?
Last year I paid $47 a cylinder with torque plate at percise engine rebuilders. ALWAYS get it done with a torque plate as you get much better ring seal.
If you plan on keeping the engine a long time is doesn't pay to cheap out. I found my reciepts.
Degrease - $68.95
Magnaflux - $55.50
Torque plate hone - $44.25 x 8
Install cam bearings - $77.65
Resurfacing block - $263.50 (I mocked up my rotating assembly, measured and took it back to save labour. Makes a square block and equalizes compression)
a few word of note for rebuilding an engine, you will need new cam bearings as the cleaning process destroys them. Often reconditioning parts will cost more than new. Connecting rods and cylinder heads as examples. Also throw the factory main caps bolts in the recycle bin, get new ones. I've broke several on retorquing to half torque. Using studs instead of bolts WILL require a main align hone.
My plan is to get the engine cleaned up and magnafluxed, then I'll get it bored to .030. I'll put in new pistons, cam rod and main bearings, freeze plugs, gaskets all around, bolts, timing chain. I'm going to put a better cam in as well as intake, and carb. I'm going to try and find some better heads. Mine have a few valves burnt and the cost to redo those heads will not be worth it.
I realize the engine is not the first thing to be built. I am just trying to price out the different things that I am going to need for the truck so that I can come up with an overall plan.
I deal with Warman Engine rebuilders.
They work out of their acreage in the evenings and are cheaper than in the city. I have never had any problems with any engine work they have done for me. They quoted me $1500 for my 351 that the washer went into the piston. But that is a good clean engine. If it had cylinder wear and other issues it would be more.
