I can pick up a 1989 4x4 Bronco cheap that runs good. I own a 5.0 1986 4x4 f150 and a 351 1980 4x4 f150. Are any parts from the f150's worth saving before scraping the trucks? They both run but are end of life for me. Great automatic trans in both. How do you tell if 9" rear ends and if so are they worth removing?
Thanks
The 89 is going to be EFI unlike your other two trucks. There are a good number of mechanical parts that will swap into the Bronco should anything ever need replacing. The 9" rear end has no inspection cover on the back of it. The only access to the gearset is by removing the third-member. The newer 8.8" rear end has an inspection cover and the axle tubes are pressed into the differential housing while the 9" axle housing and tubes are all one piece. These are the most obvious visible differences. The 9" has long been considered one of the finest axle assemblies period. There is some concern that the 9" was never equipped with a VSS mounting but there are ways around that.
The C6 auto will swap in rather simply. The AOD is a bit more complicated due to the TV (throttle valve) that must be employed for shift control. If you have the tv cable setup from another truck though, I imagine the procedure to swap would be less complex. Someone who has actually done this swap would be better to give more advice on this point.
I am not as familiar with the transfer cases in the older trucks but I do know that most of the cases that marry to the C6 also work with the AOD. I am not as certain about which cases will marry to other transmissions.
If the 86 is EFI you can take all the sensors and the computer, the wiring harness will have some differences if i recall right. Door glasses, trims and internals, dashboard (all these part are a little less esgonomical, but will fit the newer Bronco should there be a need for them).
