Yup -- that's surge... You need a WW or ported housing.

Yes turbo surge is bad for your turbo. Not too many people are able to get that much out of the Edge, so congrats. Many have to upgrade to a real chip before they see surge.

The 2 popular fixes for surge are either install a wicked wheel, or swap to a ported shroud compressor housing to change the boost curve. The wicked wheel is cheaper, the housing is less labor intensive.

Have you monitored your boost pressure while this noise happens, or is your data sampling rate set where you don't really see it?

The edge is generally supposed to be safe without gauges, but I'd keep it below 2,500 rpm's until you get them installed to be on the safe side. Stick some gauges in and watch what the numbers do, then upgrade to a real chip and not only feel the difference in the SOTP meter, but watch the difference in the gauges.

Well, a stock truck can surge under the right conditions, but good luck with however you go about fixing it. Get those gauges in!!

not sure about driving, do you mean liek stopped at a traffic light? and idle is perfectly fine, its your exhaust back pressure valve closing to help warm your engine up quicker

That jet sound is caused by the EBPV (exhaust back pressure valve) closing. Perfectly normal on a cold morning. It should release when you step on the skinny pedal. If you are just sitting at idle it will close again in less then a minute and release when you hit the pedal again. When the engine warms up it will stay open. The valve closes to help warm up the engine faster by increasing the exhaust back pressure and increasing the load on the engine.

Here's some info about the EBPV operation:

"The most common complaint from customers is that they are hearing some sort of an air leak on start up and the vehicle lacks power momentarily especially in cold weather. What they are most likely hearing is the Exhaust Backpressure Valve.

The purpose of the back pressure valve is to increase cab heat and shorten the amount of time it takes to defrost the windshield,
it also is used to help reduce exhaust emissions.

The back pressure valve is located on the turbo, exhaust side connected to the turbo exhaust pipe. Here’s how the system works.

The movement of the back pressure valve is controlled by the exhaust backpressure regulator (makes sense!) which is mounted in the turbo pedestal. The PCM(computer) uses measured exhaust back pressure, intake air temperature, engine oil tempter and engine load to determine back pressure regulator operation.

During each initial engine start up, the PCM exercises the back pressure valve to cycle on and off once. If during start up the temperature
of the intake air is below 37 degrees Fahrenheit and the oil temperature is between 32degrees and 140 degrees the PCM will continue to
keep the back pressure valve partially closed. As the engine oil temperature rises during operation the PCM will control the back pressure
valve in response to the rising oil temperature. What this means to you is that on cool to cold mornings you will hear a hissing sound and
lack power on the way to the coffee shop. Also, if you put the pedal to the floor, the valve will open and the truck takes off
."

That sounds like your exhaust back pressure valve closing to help in warmup. Someone more familiar will chime in. I never hear it on my 99, but the bosses 01 will start sounding like a jet while warming up on a cold morning.

EDIT: Robin beat me to it...

Mine makes a wooshing sound, thought i was my boots. They needed to be replaced. Replaced the boots, some of it stopped. Get up to about 2800 rpm and it does it again. Found out by Curtis, Lisa, and Bill that I have a leaking up-pipe. When my boots were bad drivin down the hiway at 75 or so it would make a rapid tissh tisssh tisssh sound.
