would it affect anything by removing it. would i remove just the switches and hoses or remove the box as well?
how can i tell for sure if it has california emissions?
how can i tell for sure if it has california emissions?
Contact Ford for some build info. There's a thread in here somewhere on how to do it. My truck has the California Emissions package on it, or did before the previous owner ripped it all off, and it shows it on my spec sheet that Ford sent.
Or, you could post the DSO(District Sales Office) code and someone can tell you what state the truck was ordered in.
I don't know for sure, but doesn't Canada also have emissions?
you can pull the whole thing out. i have one sitting in a box on my front porch and the truck never did mind losing it. as for how to know for sure it's cali emissions, simple, bc it's there
fordzilla80 -my dso code is 74 which i have figured out is seattle.i know the truck was made in minnisota. so it must have been sold in seattle(meaning no cali emissions?), in canada where i live there is no emissions testing. thanks
dohc_chump -here is a shot of my tag on the rad support. does this help any? thanks
You guys are forgetting that in 1984 all 50 states started to have the EEC-IV TFI-IV computer and ignition system. Depending on engine, options etc...
The Solenoids are for the Thermactor Air Diverter, and Thermactor Air Bypass system. It controls the TAD and TAB Valves, which controls the air flow from the air pump.
If this system is functioning correctly, I would leave it alone. Removing it will put the computer system in limp home mode, and drivability and fuel mileage will suffer.
To check to see if the computer is working like it should you will need to do a computer diagnostic.
The only way to remove these components without compromising performance or fuel mileage is to do a Duraspark II conversion to the engine. This entails replacing the distributor, ignition module, and carb to non computer controlled versions.
The computer is under the dash. A Rectangular silver box with about 30 wires going into it.
The Carb is computer controlled from the factory. It will have a Feedback solenoid attached that controls fuel mixture via the computer and the O2 sensor in the exaust. Wires to the Feedback solenoid are Tan/Light Green stripe and Red.
If your carb has been replaced, you may not have a computer controlled one anymore. However this will throw your timing out the window, as the distributor is computer controlled as well. It will put the computer in limp home mode.
I've seen where people have taken smog components off their engine hiddly piddly, and have a worse running engine for it. If you remove something, make sure you remove all the computer controlled components. Then replace them with the non computer controlled versions, Carb, ignition module, distributor, etc... Otherwise a bad running engine could result.
where abouts under the dash? i will check tommorow for this. i replaced the egr valve today and have no hesitation at all. no spark knock and seems to have lots of power.
where would the feedback solenoid be located on the carb ? i dont see any wires going to the carb. any help would be greatly appreciated thanks.
