Transmission Problem

1970 F-100, 302, 3speed manual.

Was backing out of the driveway in the rain and my foot slipped off the clutch. Now the truck won't move and grinds in all gears when the clutch is released. I can feel it trying to engage, but it just grinds and grinds.

Any ideas on what it might be or where to find a good used tranny?

Check your shift linkage to see if it is hung up between gears. Does the clutch feel normal, free play ok?

I've checked the linkage and it's okay.

The clutch feels fine. I can feel the shifting into each gear and when I release the clutch I can feel it start to engage very slightly. Then, in each gear I get a constant grinding, which changes pitch depending on which gear is selected.

Just helping troubleshoot. Are you sure the clutch dis-engages? Will the truck roll when you depress the clutch?
Can you shut the engine off, push the clutch in, shift it into a gear and then start the engine?

Yes, the clutch disengages. I can depress the clutch, shift gears, shift into neutral, disengage the truck, it rolls when the clutch is in and when the clutch is out in neutral. It starts fine in neutral, or with the clutch depressed in any gear. When I let the clutch out slowly, it feels like it is starting to engage, but as I continue to let it out I hear a constant grinding sound which, as I said, varies in pitch depending on which gear is selected.

(not sure why my other reply shows up twice)

I am at a loss to explain this. I wouldn't expect some thing to break when your foot slipped off the clutch. You might take off the driveshaft and see if the output shaft will turn. Let us know the outcome.

Very funny, pal.

I'm a 56 year old man who was simply backing out of the driveway. If you haven't any ideas, that'll be fine.

The RPMs were likely about 2000.

Thanks anyway.

Try pulling the flywheel cover and seeing if any small bits of clutch fall out. I've seen clutch plates that exploded when they were dropped, but I'd be surprised if that's what happened at 2000 RPM. Still, it's easy enough to check underneath the cover.

I had a friend who snapped one of the shafts inside a 3-speed on his 3/4 ton van when he popped the clutch. Cost him about $200 to have it repaired (not including R&R). Hopefully yours is an easier problem.

It turns out my problem is not with the transmission, but the differential.

Anybody know which years will fit this 1970 F-100 and what might be a source? Am I better off finding a used one in a junk yard, having this one rebuilt, or what?

About any 9" will work as long as the axle splines are the same. I would go the junkyard route. Before you put it in, clean it up real good and look for any cracks on the piece the ring gear bolts to. Was the spider gears the problem in the old one?
