Hi Guys, as the title says my shift tower weeps gear oil, not real bad but after 3000 miles the top of the tranny is covered with oil. This is a 78 tranny/tc combo behind a 460 in a 69 3/4 ton. The cap that holds the shifter in place is in decent shape and the gasket under the shift tower still looks good. Is there some sort of seal or boot available that would go over the gear shift handle and sit on the cap to seal it off? Thanks for any help.
Floktndr, have you checked the pressure release valve on the tranny to make sure it it open and clear?Could be a pressure buildup problem. I have not seen your problem before on an NP435,just my 2 cents worth. I would also check the reverse sender switch for a leak.
Hi Nod, no I haven't checked the breather, the top cap on it spins freely but I did not take it out and actually look at it, I will though, and it definitely isn't the reverse sender switch, I have already looked at it. Thanx.
I did check that trans and it doesn't have a breather on it, the one that I thought was there is on the transfer case. So the trans must breathe through the shift tower. I will pull the shift tower and goop up the gasket and see if that helps.
I just got done installing my 435 back in my 76 and they make a boot kit that comes with the boot, the spring, the cone washer and the retainer cap. I got mine from Inland truck parts the part # was AX94906KIT and it was 21.00
Hope that helps.
Richard
Does that boot look like it would help seal the trans (at least a little) or is it the big rubber boot that screws down on top of the transmission tunnel that the shift lever goes through?
This boot is about 3 inches round and pushes down over the top of the trans tower it has a couple notches for the pins and should seal any oil leaks. Its exactly what you are looking for I didn't know they made it but I needed the spring, washer and retaining cup and the boot comes with it. My 68 F250 has the same trans and its been in the family since new and it doesn't have this boot so I am going to order another kit.

Thanks Richard, your description sounds just like the picture in my shop manual, although I have never seen one in real life either. I will pick up one of those kits.
