I have a 1992 F150 with a M50D 5 speed and it leaks pretty good. I thought its was the shift tower so i put goop gasket sealer on and it doesnt leak there anymore, but it is still leaking. I cant tell where it is coming from. Its almost like since I fixed the shift tower it builds up pressure and comes out some other place. Can someone help or does anyone else have this.
There are only a few places that this transmission could leak - shifter plugs at the back of the shifter tower, the shifter stub seal at the top of the shifter tower (both common), the input shaft seal, the output shaft seal, or a crack in the case.(uncommon)
Like many leaks, if it's a real mess it may need to be cleaned first so you can see where the leak starts. You can remove the floor covering and the transmission tunnel plate to get a really good view of the top of the transmission. In the past, I've found the shifter stub seal to be very prone to tearing, and it leaks all over everything. You'll need to order a kit to reseal it, lots of these seal kits have the shifter bushings in them too - not a bad idea. On the shifter tower plugs, you can order replacements (the originals shrink over time) or you can "glue" them in place with RTV after cleaning the plugs and bores with a shot of solvent on a rag. I have had good luck just sealing the originals in place if they're not too far gone.
Yea i have done the 3 little plugs in the back for the shifts rails and I put in a new shifter bushing kit with that seal. It looks like it is coming out of that thing on the side of the tranny that shifts 5th and reverse gear. Thanks for the help.
