Air Box Idea

So In seach of a problem on my truck I decided to get a lil more HP for no$$. I took the air box apart and flipped the top part over, put the filter back on and conected it all back up wtih the hoses. I drove around for a little bit, and I dont think I gained much HP but it sounds sweet. I was wondering if anyone else had done this, I know I need an oiled filter to do this but what is it gonna harm if i dont have an oiled filter.

Trying to remember... does the '90 still have the round air filter? If so, turning the top over won't hurt as long as the weather is warm and dry. You won't have the warm air pickup which helps drivability in cool and damp weather. I did almost the same thing in my '71 429 with a taller air filter. Of course it only comes out on nice days. The oiled K&N will help trap more stuff while flowing better but isn't in itself necessary. It would probably help performance more if you could draw cooler air from in front of the radiator but the psychological boost from the noisy intake is hard to measure.
Hope this helps.

Flipping yor lid, is what we used to call that and it supposedly does ad a couple horsepower, depending on how restrictive your stock inlet is. For a sneaky set up, locate the filter assembly for an '84-'85 Mustang 5.0L 4bbl. It's a dual snorkle unit and you can use dryer vent hose to run air from your grille or behind the front bumper.
