Oh boy, this will get interesting. I'll go first- I ' personally' like a 40-series Flowmaster, original 40 is what I bought for this truck but haven't installed it yet. I had the same 40 series on my 03 F250 5.4 and it sounded sweet. Its personal preference, so... let me go get some popcorn And welcome to FTE!
EDIT: Its a 2 chamber 40-series FWIW

No kidding!
That's like asking which ketchup tastes the best.
It's all personal preference.
Youtube has lots of 4.6 and 5.4 muffler combinations (Borla, Corsa, Magnaflow, Flowmaster, Dynomax).
Based on posts from Mike Troyer an unchambered (i.e., Magnaflow) offers better (small) performance.
Though it's not an absolute must, yes, we do recommend getting rid of the "Slowmaster" muffler and replacing it with an appropriate Magnaflow unit - that will help to improve torque. Now exactly which muffler you use will depend on what kind of sound characteristics you want, so that's why you need to call, so we can go over all of that with you. It's not just length alone, for example.
What that Flowmaster setup is doing is actually *reducing* torque on part throttle at any rpm, and reducing torque below about 3000 rpm a at any throttle position - and that is due to all those silly baffles & chambers they use as part of their "sound engineering" - all they are is impediments to airflow, and slow down exhaust gas velocity, which is why you don't see much in the way of HP gains form them, and actually lose torque, especially in the lower rpm ranges. When it comes to torque, exhaust gas *velocity* is absolutely key.
No, we will not need to change what we do in the tuning if you change to a different cat-back exhaust system or just do a muffler change like that - that will be fine.
Interesting, Mr Charlie. Is it a drastic loss? I just really like the sound, its worth a small loss to me as I don't tow much and I'm not looking to have scorching 1/4 mile times. I'm just after the 2-chamber sound, personal preference as stated.
Tim,
I've never researched them, but (as with most cat-back systems), I can't imgaine it's more than 1-2% difference.
Based on the good ole "butt-dyno", I haven't noticed much change with the flowmaster muffler I have on my 150. However, I will say this, I don't use it for towing at all as I still have my 6.0 for that. Towing would probably be were I would more then likely notice it more then unloaded or just hauling a few things which I have from time to time.

I doubt that there is really anybody that does it purely for performance. Even on my 6.0, I still made sound a requirement with the system I have on there. Performance was a major aspect though as that truck has a little over 500HP at the rear wheels, but sound still played a part.
I think with exhausts sound will always play a part, maybe small or maybe huge(my pure focus with the 5.4), but I don't think people mess with exhausts purely for HP. I just don't see anyone getting an exhaust that has been shown for 20 more horses on its own and it has no "mean" sound to it versus one that gets 10 horses and sounds "badass", I think the one that has sound would still be the more popular one.
here is my videos from my 09 when i had it. when i traded the truck i switch over the exhaust kit from the 09 with a 5.4 to the 10 with a 4.6 and they sound just he same
Well I knew that was a loaded question. I had a 40 series Flowmaster on my silverado with a 4.8, and it was very throaty and had a deep tone. Having said that, it wasn't very loud at an idle or while driving. I mean you could hear it, but it just wasn't loud. It would resonate in the cab and sounded great, which I guess is all I really cared about. I want it to have a deep throaty aggressive tone, and I'm going to end up dumping it before the axle. Now, having said all that, I don't want it to sound like an old farm truck with glass packs. I'm not trying to have the loudest truck in town, just a nice low rumble as I'm driving.
I have a Magnaflow on my 4.6 and love it. Like the others said it is all personal preference. I think a SI/SO catback from Magnaflow would give the rumble your looking for.
Fordtruckman...It's hard to know what an exhaust sounds like in a youtube clip, but that sounds pretty good.
Yeah I went through a few videos before I found a clip that sounded decent. It's still nothing compared to hearing it in person. I bought my muffler based on videos I heard from youtube but when it was finally installed it was a lot louder then I expected.
