windshield trim question

windshield trim question
the windshield trim along my windshield is pulling up and I need to fix some rust bubbles around the a pillars. My question is, is that piece also the seal or is it just there to fill the gap? I'd like to be able to pull it off and make sure there's no more rust to take care of but I don't want any leaks as this trucks my dd for now

The trim is just to cover the gap and the edge of the glass, it does not seal the windshield.
If its rusted under the windshield, I would remove the windshield and take care of the rust (or take it to a body shop) before it gets bad and put a new windshield in it.
