Exterior Electrical Advice

I am in the process of tracking down a bunch of electrical problems on my 76. One of the PO's used tons of those "side splice" clip things to tap in to power. This has left tons of damaged insulation in those sections and is likely a contributor to most of my electrical lighting problems.

My question is what kind of connections should I use to repair the sections damaged? The splice will need to be weathertight.

I'm an electrical Noob and would prefer to not have to spend all my time tracking down shorts in the future!

The best way is to solder the connection and then use heatshrink tubing to cover the repair.

In the mean time, I've looked up a few methods. Most of them involve using solder and shrink tube like you mentioned.
They also use a sealant but don't say what kind. Any idea what type of sealant is reccomended?

Waterproof heatshrink tubing has the sealer built in.

I'm an automotive wireman by trade, and I can tell you soldering is the only method I use. If the wires are a little corroded - which they almost always are - you can run through the strands with a small wire brush and apply a little flux and the solder will stick. old wire doesn't like to be soldered.

If the wiring isn't broken, and it's just an insulation issue, you could also use "liquid electrical tape" - it brushes on and makes a permanent repair over the gaps in the insulation.
