In an effort to get rid of the P0401 code that keeps coming back about 50 miles after resetting it,I took the advice offered on this forum and decided to change the DPFE sensor. I got a new one and went to put it on and found out that my truck doesnt have one! By the way,its a 2001 4.6 L . There is absolutely no evidence of one EVER being there. No dead end connectors, plugged rubber lines etc. There are two threaded holes where the sensor should be but thats it.Is it possible that some trucks escaped the factory without this device? I would put one on but I don't see anywhere to hook it up.Any suggestions? (Be nice now)
GammaDriver: Thanks for the reply. Most of the manuals I've looked at show the DPFE sensor mounted to the drivers side of the throttle body.I found out that mine is mounted on the firewall. Can't explain why,I'm just glad I found it.
I can tell you with absolute accuracy that if the PCM is setting a 401 code it is because it expects to have that system in place.
You either got a truck that has been modified or something has gone on you don't know about.
Here is what is supposed to be in place.
A metal tube from the drivers side exhaust manifold to and EGR valve. Mounted on that tube should be two smaller tubes to feed pressure signals to the DPFE.
On the intake should have been mounted an vaccum regulator with hoses/ solenoid that feeds vaccum to the EGR to operate it at the request of the PCM.

The only other explanation is the motor was built for use in another country where the PCM program has the EGR system inhibited and someone replaced the PCM with a US PCM that has the EGR bit set for operation.
What's the history on the truck?
