Some times it just goes wrong!

Well wednesday evening I had loaded up the 86 BII to scrap it. I pulled the tires and wheels (in great shape) and pulled the fuel tank. I drained it, pulled the sender, and filled it with water. I then started to cut it in half(local scrap yard requires this). After making about a 12" cut on one side I moved to the other and as I started to cut thru (with a 4" cutoff wheel) BOOMMMM-WHOOOF! Out came a fireball and fried my right arm from the tips of my fingers to the shoulder. 2nd and some 3rd degree burns. Had to spend the night in the university of cincinnati burn center. The doc says that there will be some scarring but it should heal up fine. This just goes to show that no matter how many times you do something it only takes that one time to bite you in the ***! By the way when I got home yesterday from the hospital I filled that damn thing with water again and finished cutting it lol. I hauled it off the the scrap yard today.

Them air (fume) pockets will get ya! You lucky, ought to go buy a lotto ticket!

Glad it's only burns, it could have been a lot worse as I'm sure you understand.

Personally, I refrain from welding/cutting on gas tanks, I had a boss in a JY I worked at as a kid used to stand on the trunk and drop his torch over the filler neck and explode them, he is 6'8" about #400 and I seen him go flying more then once ... Decided I'd not do that!

Ya I prefer not to mess with them as well. But the local yard requires this be done or they will not take the vehicle. At least the doc is letting me return to work on monday. I think he understood that I am not the type to just sit around, I need to work or go stir crazy lol.

Yea, I know the feeling, I am as well hyperactive ... I've been flat for like 10 weeks now, unfortunately I have no choice, they got me on Quaaludes as I call them, they pretty much immobilize me.

Though I just got back from the Doc and she said today is the day ... I can start walking at will, just cannot carry more then a soda can, no bending etc ... YaaHooo!

At least the doggies and I can go for walks now.

Man that would kill me for sure. I have a script for oxycadone but haven't taken them yet. I am trying to just man up and live with my own stupid mistake lol. I had a boss once that use to say "hell man it will make you tuff, just keep working". I always admired the man for his tuffness and his welding/fab skills. Guess I am just trying to live up to his standards.

Thats crazy, glad you survived. I have heard of some yards requiring the tanks to be cut in half, thankfully the one I use doesn't care.

I am exactly that type ... I am one of those that says buck up!

Then I got old!

Good idea Oreo ... Even an el-cheapo electric would do the job a lot safer.

I don't plan to do anymore junking. I do use a cutoff wheel alot tho. I need to get tanks for my torches but that wheel does a great job for most of my fab jobs. I know how you feel Festus on the getting old part. I may only be 42 but I have had it ruff and most of it was self inflicted. I can't start my morning without a handful of ibuprophen with my coffee. People tell me to ease up on the phyisical stuff but i figure that if I do I will only hurt more from disuse of the parts that hurt.

i know after doing almost nothing for 2 months after eye surgery its been very hard to get the body to go again. and have found it's harder to do the same jobs at work i did before. it sucks to get old and have to pay for all the crazy and down right stupid things you did when younger. LOL. hope you heal up fast.

I do have that going for me. I usually heal pretty quick and infection is pretty much a non issue for me. That as well came in handy when younger. Guys would catch things from the same "aquantinces" that never came my way if you know what I mean lol. But i still worry with the age thing if my resistance is still that tuff. Last thing I need is to have a prolonged battle with this burn.

Young pup ... Give yourself a few more years!

Amen to the Young and Dumb actions ... Lived a life of them and now am paying the price, yet I haven't learned because I keep doing em ...

And the healing time gets longer and longer and the hurts hurt worse and worse!

lol ... Neither did I.

I've always shied away from meds, don't like chemicals, unfortunately it was either take them or get committed (admitted to the hospital), strapped down, harpooned and force feed them, couldn't do that, I'd miss my doggies!

Wifes orders ... For my own good! (our good)
I did not listen and re-injured myself, thats why so long, thats why the hard line from my ol'lady and the docs ... I guess their serious!

I was released to walk today, I'll be under my truck tomorrow, sleeping with the dogs tomorrow night ...
That is if she lets me in the house, else it'll be alone with my truck!

BTW, Keep them burns clean, infection is the worst possible thing you could have happen right now!

I am trying my best to keep them clean. When i go back to work monday I plan to wear a welding sleeve and glove on that arm. Should keep the heat and the gringing dust out. My boss has called me 3 times since it happened to check up on me. He was worried that they would lose alot of money if i was out for an extended time. Mayber it will show them just how much they need me. I think he realized that they couldn't just pull in anyone off the street and have them do my job. To many things that in my head only that gets done lol.
