My focused question is, of the available '83-86 factory style controllers, which brand is the most reliable? There are Delphi, Wells, Standard and some no-name stuff. THe brand names are all pretty much the same price but some of the no-names are suspiciously cheaper... if you know what I mean.
Before everyone starts telling me how I should modify my glow plug system, let me tell you that I'm not interested in do that at this time. The ORIGINAL controller and glow plugs lasted from '86 to '04 (about 100K miles), when I finally ended up with three or four burned out GPs. I replaced the GPs in '04 with Autolites and they worked just fine. Truck started great even in sub-zero. Somehow, during the head gasket incident, all 8 ended up fried. No idea how. The controller I installed in '04... I have no idea who made it. Haven't checked it (because I did not discover the glow plugs until the heads were off) but it seems prudent to replace it. I will check the relay before it all goes back together.
The problem is the currently available controllers are not as good as the original (what is), and when they fail (the old style (83-86), they fail on ... One set of exploded tips and you'll be pulling heads again, if not more.
The newer style does not.
Personally, I would go with the Delphi if I was making that choice.
