I am going to install a check valve in the fuel line right before the fuel filter. I will warn you I do not even remotely understand all of the different kinds of line sizes and fittings and what not. But, what size threads does the check valve need to fit in order to fit in that connection on the fuel filter?
mmmm...... not seeing why that would help. you still have to crank it to put pressure to the check valve to fire. for the check valve to stop the back flow you'd want to put it right at the tank so the line always stays fuel. again, not sure why your having drain back issues. if you think its the reason you have to crank a while before firing, then you may have non fuel issues like a glow plug issue causing that
Yes I am having air intrusion problems and was told that if I did this it would help greatly. The truck will start normal,no cranking required. But right after it starts, it will either start running rough of die.
Pull the two rubber pipes off of the water seperator canister and use a check valve to join the two pipes together.
You can then either get a filter head from a 7.3 or just change the stock filter more often.

Have you checked your return lines, caps and o-rings at your injectors?
Yes the return lines and eveything are new. I have spent the last weeks working on my truck a ton just to get it running again, and right now I really dont want to spend tracking down a leak. I am either going to figure out a way to install a check valve and make it work or an electric fuel pump. I know you guys say I should fix the air intrusion first, and someday when I have the money I am going to replace the whole fuel system. But for now, I can settle with covering up the problem.
Install an EP8012S ($41.99@ Advance Auto) in the line between the mechanical pump and you will have installed a check valve. The Electric Fuel Pump has one way valves in it. I installed mine to prime the system. Just leave it on for 30 minutes and it will have filled your system with fuel and eliminated any air. It will also let you know if you need to replace the O'rings on the injectors.
And the misconception is ... The Supply is the only drain back path!
You cannot hack in a check valve on the return system!
So, You have one of two choices ... Hack in an electric or fix it correctly, probably for less then the cost of an electric and relay to properly run the electric at or near the tank where electrics are properly installed.
