REBUILT E4OD knocking? Ideas...
I put in a motor and we had an E4OD built for the truck. It is a 96 F250 with the 5.8. I started driving it and it was not making this noise. After my first tank of gas, i could hear knocking coming from the truck and go to looking around and it is coming from the front of trans/back of motor. What could be making this noise??
All shifts are smooth and have no other weird noises. I have no trouble going into reverse, but going into drive, the whole drivetrain jumps. What could be the problem here??

Trans and motor ounts are tight and new. I dropped the trans today and seen where the flywheel was hitting on the inside of the bellhousing. It is hitting on either side of the trans towards the top-left and top-right bolts. Then i seen we didnt have the dowl pins in place. could these cause the trans to shift somehow under light throttle?
Do the smallblock C6 and the E4OD use the same flexplate?? I ordered a flexplate a while back from the Zone and i am not sure which truck i ordered it for. Being a 351w i thought it would be the same. Both trans are behind a 351w so coul this be a problem?

Missing dowel pins? Gotta have them!
BTW, unless I'm wrong, the 5.0 is 50 oz imbalance and the 5.8 is 28 oz imbalance on the flexplates. The wrong flexplate would cause shaking all the time if you had the wrong one on your motor. Don't ask how I know.
My guess is the trans was shifting around on the back of the motor when you were shifting from R to D. Sounds familiar, too.
I taught transmissions some years ago and my students would show me new and inventive ways to improperly assemble an automatic trans. Dowel pins was a common one when the engine class would do the mill and my class would do the transmission.

The flexplate was not vibrating at all. I had the truck started and it was a smooth idle and no vibration. I had the inspection plate off and could see the thing spining so i know it wasnt shaking or anything.

BTW i could see the flexplate when the motor was running, it didnt seem to be shaking. The only time the thing would hit was in gear under torque. Would not having the dowl pins cause this?

Hmm . . .
Those dowel pins aren't optional - you need them there to hold the transmission indexed against the back of the block.
I am very sure you problem is the missing pins. Like I said before, I taught this stuff when Sequoia Institute was still around, before its absorption into the Wyotech brand.
You would be surprised at how much your transmission is moving around w/o those dowel pins. Put them in.

EDIT: Just messin ray. Thanks for your help. Ill post back and let everyone know if that was the problem and if it fixed the rubbing issue

UPDATE
Well Ray was right and dowel pins arent an optional thing with these transmissions. Without them they move left or right when torque is applied from the motor and hits on the walls of the bellhousing. Now that i got that fixed, i had to pull it out again this weekend and change my NEW flexplate that is now in two pieces
