white smoke when acclerating
Black smoke = Not enough Air
This is based on wether or not your ratios are correct. There are a lot of other things it could be, but this is the basics when it comes to diesel engines.
1 thing these 7.3's are famous for is blowing tips on fuel injectors. What happens is you get a drop of water in your fuel line and the holes are really small in your injectors. The water will settle in the tip of the injector, but can't get blown out because the holes are too small for the drop of water to go through. Then what happens is the injector gets abnormally hot from the combustion stroke (fuel cools the injectors and water prevents the tips from cooling). When it get's it's hottest (approx 15 degrees before TDC) just before the fuel spray (5 degrees before TDC), the whole tip of the injector blows off as the water steams up and trys to escape with high pressure just as the fuel pressure trys to spray the fuel. You then have a fuel pour issue instead of the normal fuel spray. In other words, instead of 5-7 tiny small holes, it turns into 1 bigger hole.
Your engine will still run, just produce white smoke only during acceleration, and will produce a strong fuel smell with no pinging (diesel knock). Most call it just a plain bad injector and replace the injectors, but will not do a bleed off to make sure no water is still in the line.
Just something to look at as well as all the other usual stuff...
Blown rings are no the cause for 1 of 2 things happen. Coolant will get in combustion and produce white smoke, but strong fuel smell will not be present. Oil will get in combustion and produce black smoke, but no strong fuel smell. Both of these will cause a ping (diesel knock) condition. Plus oil pressures will be lower than normal.
Incomplete combustion will kick off codes (due to OX sensor in one of the 2 banks reading high Nox) and produce a ping.
High pressure oil pump could cause the o-rings in the injector to unseat, but will not cause the fuel smell.
I hope this answers some questions for you and helps you in determining your issue. I answered this way to assist others that answered as well to come up with a conclusion to the problem.

think it is due to lack of traction though

The '84 6.9 I had allowed me to time the injection pump; can't help you on the 7.3.
Hope this helps,
