I have a 2001 F250 4x4 and I am having some 4 wheel drive problems.
First --I have one hub lock that turns real easy and the other one I need pliers to turn to lock.
Second --when the hub is in "auto"position and I try to engage the 4 wheel drive the light comes on but no 4 wheel drive and while driving down the road with the switch in 2 wheel drive it makes noise as if the 4 wheel drive is trying to engage.
Third--if I have the hubs in locked position and I engage the 4 wheel drive switch I get 4 high but not 4 low.
Do I need new hubs? Hub locks? do i have switch issues?or all of the above??
Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance
Sounds like one or both of your front hubs are binding, hence the difficulty in manual engagement and no auto engagement. Have you checked the fluid in the transfer case? When was it last changed? Was it changed with ATF? What do you mean that you get 4HI, but not 4LO, you stated that you cannot get the front to engage at all hence "no 4 wheel drive?"
xfer case fluid was changed about 40,000 miles ago and the fluid level is good.
I get the 4 hi when I manually lock the hubs to the lock position but nothing in the auto position.
