Quick Help Needed on purchasing Decision

I've been looking to buy either an X or 250 for the last month and a half and today found a really nice looking X but....
the body has 383K on it, engine has 120K and he believes it to be the original transmission! I don't think I can even begin to list everything he's done to it, but I want to know am I setting myself up for problems here? I can pick it up for $14,000, two sets of wheels, front end done last year, new shocks and springs/3" lift, new paint, brakes, new turbo, alternator, custom bumpers.....any thoughts?
should I just find something stock and do all the add ons myself or is it worth taking a shot on this one? He has ALL the service records all the way back from the original owner, he's the second owner. All the work has been done by shops....he's only dont bolt ons himself.
HELP!!!!

Did you get to test drive it? That is the most important thing that will help determine the value.
What year X, what engine, 4wd? The more information you can provide the more help everyone can be on here, on potential problems to look for.

Good Call... I test drove it today! It seemed to wander a bit, but then again I've been driving an escape for the last 6 months and he reassured me the front end is tight and it was just cause I wasn't used to driving a big truck with a small lift and bigass tires....the wandering was minimal. It's a 2000, build date 02/00, it's got the 7.3L, and again that isn't the original the one in it has 120K. It's got 4wd and he throwing in the the stock wheels with 3 new tires and 2 tires with 65%+.
Back to the test drive, it drove like a dream other than the slight getting used to the wander and poor turning radius. It has an edge tuner with on the fly shifting...works great!
Here are some photos to show you what I mean when I say he's got her all juiced up on the outside!

that is a pretty sweet looking X. I just picked up my 2000 7.3 liter x (all stock - but hopefully not for much longer) about 5 months ago and am really happy. If that is the original tranny, you might want to save some money on an eventual replacement such as a BTS.
Below is a link to a checklist, on this site for what to look for on a used 7.3 liter. if everything looks good and you feel comfortable, make an offer.

Good luck!

If it were me, miles never meant anything to me, I only care about maintenance. It is a bad looking truck, you are lucky I didn't drive buy it when I was looking and I have driven all over Wisconsin this summer/ fall. As was previously mentioned, buy it and assume you will have to pay for some maintenance in the near future, then you wont be all bent out of shape when the time comes.

Edit, just looked at the pics, Its even here in Milwaukee, too.

So I took the truck in to a Ford Dealership today and had them do a sweep of the truck and run some diagnostics on the truck, everything came back good! They said the truck look good all around.
My only worry, I was looking through the giant folder of records he has on the truck and I can't find anything about a new engine being dropped in.... I asked him and he said that the dealer he bought it from told him the engine had been replaced by the previous owner, but no one seems to have any records.... seems a little funny to me!
I don't know what to think...383,000 miles is an awful lot for a truck to be asking $14K and not have proof that the engine was replaced.
Any thoughts anyone? She runs great, looks great, but.....

Asking $14K? Offer $11.5K

Who pays asking price?? I got mine about 2 weeks ago for $1600 less than asking.

It never hurts to ask!

Did the oasis report show anything, did you get the dealer to run an oasis report?

If he doesn't have proof of the engine swap, I would consider that a deal breaker. The whole price is established on the premise of a new engine. If he can't prove that it happened, then the market value drops SIGNIFICANTLY. Even Diesels don't last forever.

Otherwise, its a pretty sweet looking ride!

Yeah, the OASIS report didn't show anything except for a camshaft sensor last year, but he mentioned something about it only showing things from a certain time back.
The original asking price was $14,500..... I guess I'm pretty torn, but can't buy a truck just cause it looks super sweet, I need to know that it's gonna last and work!
I paid the Ford dealership $100 to do a diagnostic test on the engine and it came up with some injector codes, but they said that those were most likely from the chip that he had installed, so they disconnected it and some other codes came up but I haven't gotten an explaination on those yet.
So is there any way to look at the engine serial number and compare that to the truck's VIN to see if it's the original? or am I **** out of luck, set on a truck that I probably shouldn't buy?

I am not sure if you can find the original engine serial number from the Oasis report, but I know there is another report.... I believe it is called HvBOM, that would tell you the serial number.
Usually you can find the serial # on the HPOP label or next to the oil filter, there is a flat spot where it is stamped.

You could always tell the guy to provide you with proof or to get you in touch with the original owner, to find out the truth.

Sorry I know thats a bummer, when you start to doubt the seller!!!!!!

The emotional appeal can draw us to certain makes & models (which is why all of us on this forum are driving Excursions.) But the final decision to buy a particular vehicle should be strictly logical. Without proof of the engine swap, I say the logic doesn't add up on this one.

Be patient...this isn't the last Ex on the planet. Your truck will come in.
