Auto enginuity is pulling dtc of all glow plugs (p0671-p0678). I have recently tested them at the valve cover and they are all in spec. Is there any way to further test the gpcm with AE?
171,000 miles so replacing the gpcm or the glow pugs wouldn't be out of the question, however I'm in no hurry to throw away money on either option if it's not necessary.
There is a relay just in front of the gpcm but from what I've read the Excursions and CA trucks don't have a relay for the GP's, only the gpcm, is that right?
Put a new gpcm on and still have a trouble code light for the glow plugs. AE also pulls the dtc's for all glow plugs. Decided to pull the connecters at the gpcm to recheck glow plug ohm's and found one of the connectors in the blue pig tail was gone or at least not where it should be. Didn't look melted, at least the plastic was fine, but the metal clip is not there.
Can I purchase a new pigtail to rewire a new connector on?
I searched for a thread on that subject and didn't find any info.
Makes me wonder if that missing connection was somehow making AE give the motor a short when it tried to cycle the glow plugs? Just thinkin outloud!

Since the connecter is bad anyhow, pulling it apart to attempt a fix is doable because the worse that could happen is buying a new pigtail if that fix failed. Don't worry about pointing me in the wrong direction, I had that connecter apart several times and didn't notice the missing female connection till yesterday so I am %100 at fault. Got a spare gpcm now and my brother and I both have the 7.3's that take the gpcm.
any word on weather or not the repair worked? Ive got the same problem. Number 8 pin on black plug is missing, I pulled the blue cover off the plug and i dont even see where damage occured? Theres no wire, at the back of the plug where this number 8 pin is located all i see is a white plug with no wire in it? Any ideas on what the heck goes there? There is a male prong for the number 8 pin so i would think there should be something there? Any help would be nice. thanks guys
Here is the wiring diagram from the TSB Link in post 8. The wiring diagram shows terminal 8 on black connector is a no connect and
terminal 8 on green connector has a connection. That is probably the control lead from the PCM to tell the GPCM to energize the GPs.
Put the new gpcm on and checked all the wiring and realized (thanks to above schematic) that there weren't any missing wires. Cleared all codes whether by having batteries disconnected or by clearing thru AE.
Still throws all gp codes after 2 cold starts. However it doesn't smoke at all when it cold starts and it has been in the 40's and 50's here in the mornings.
It's gonna be a work in progress to hunt down a engine light problem that doesn't seem to cause a problem. I just don't like the engine light staying on all the time since I wouldn't know if it turned on for something besides the glow plug codes.
Thanks for the diagram, Ive been hunting too, Mine appears to be the control module. I will buy a new one, ive seen a some people reccomend and place to get them online. Ill search the threads for it, if someone beats me to it post it up! thanks
Seems I am having the same issue. I ignored it for a long time because it rarely gets "that" cold in SoCal...until I stayed the night in Running Springs and it snowed. Had I known about the heater block cord, I woulda used it...got towed down the mountain and it started at the bottom - go figure. Cheapest online I found was on fleabay - for $99 shipped. After reading this, I will check my harness 1st. Any suggestions on how to test the GP's thru the connectors on the GPCM? I would like to be certain before plopping down any $ on a non-refundable electric part. Thanks!
Oh, and Diesel250 - I like that Bobcat! Curious - did the wicked wheel fix all the whooshing from your intake?
