The Hoist I used was not the Harbor Freight one, or Auto Parts Store brand, those won't go high enough. (at least that I'm aware of) I used the rental type with an extension arm, that slides out of it. It has to come over the top of the entire front end. It is high. It'll come out and you can leave the entire front end intact.
I used the HF non-folder. Actually, I've used it about 30 times now! Surprised how durable it's been consideringthe the source. If you leave the tranny behind, it will handle this engine with extension out to the 1 ton position.
Spend an extra hour and FIRST remove the grill, radiator, fan, and front bulkhead (it all unbolts). The only PITA is the A/C condenser, that has to be carefully tied to the side and protected (unless you drain refrigerant and remove hoses). Then you have an opening all the way down to the bumper level. Not only makes it easier to remove engine when ready, but makes it easy to step over the bumper so you can stand in the hole to work. Leaning over the grill gets so old....
I think mine was 750... It held, but boy did it deflect! It is welded with the pivot pointing upward, but my engine ended up pointing down slightly down.
Here's is a link to the thread that details my engine swap. You can look at my albums by clicking on my user name and view my albums. I have them seperated by topics. I removed the hood and pulled the entire front end except the condenser. I guess it's possible to leave the radator and front end stuff but space would be limited at best. Check out the thread link below...I documented almost every step. Good luck, keep us posted.
