The light is coming on every so often. Battery gauge says voltage on batteries is holding. Will a code show if I get them read? Do I just need to replace the alternator?
Most likely the alternator's field brushes are reaching end-of-life.
They are an integral part of the regulator, which IS serviceable separately if you know where to find the part and are willing to disassemble the alternator to replace it. Our trucks use the color-coded "gray" regulator if that's how you decide to go.

Is it a tough job to replace the regulator? I am pretty good with fixing stuff but don't want to spend the money the regulator if I am going to screw it up and end up buy the whole alternatior.
You can start the truck and then disconnect the positive cable on both of the batteries and if the truck stays running then your alternator is good. Now if it stays running and the battery light comes back on the dash then you have an alternator that is slowing coming to the end of its life.

On an electronically-controlled vehicle (basically anything newer than 1984), you can do some severe damage to the sensitive electronic controls by doing this. Most people luck out and never have issues but there's always that one person who tries it and fries something.
Disconnecting batteries with the engine running eliminates the voltage reference point for the alternator, and the voltages may get a lot higher than the computers on our trucks can tolerate.
Batt light can also come on because of poor connections. Check all the batt connections, alt connections, and verify your grounds too... I had to replace the three-contact alt connector on my truck....
Headed over to Autozone and had them do the test. Said it was a bad regulator. $70 for a replacement. It had slipped my mine that I had replaced the altenator last year. Looked it up and I had bought it at Autozone. So I got a new one and 15 min. later it was installed.
Thanks guys for all the help. It is great to have a place where you can get some info when you need it.
how does the battery light work on dash? I have replaced both batteries on my 04 6.0L this spring and alternator was replaced last fall. Now the light acts like there is a loose connection somewhere. I had alternator bench tested a month ago and everything internal tested good. I have also checked voltage at batts when light is on and everything electrical is on and I still get 14v at batteries.
Do I need to have alternator tested again, maybe at a different shop? If so which would you recommend?
