Rear end trouble
I just bought a 1978 ford f-150 ranger xlt 4x4. Its in pretty good shape for its age. The biggest problem I can find is the rear end. The guy I bought it from said his nephew got in it when he wasn't home and when he got back it was sitting in a different place then he left it. When he went to move it, the transmission was turning the drive shaft, but the truck doesn't move. I locked it in 4 high and it'll pull with the front axle but nothing from the rear end. It doesn't make any noise back there like its grinding or anything either. I haven't had a chance to look into it much because of work. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I should look for or do? And if I have to replace the rear end, is it easier to just swap axles with another truck or replace the broken internals?

Sounds like your in for dropping the axle and pulling the third Member out of the that 9" rear. Wonder if the kid took out the Diff.
