differential locker?

I own a 96 PSD CC F350 4x4 and was thinking about installing a diff. locker in the rear only. Would this greatly increase traction? Would it be better to install front and rear? Which locker is better? The truck is stock and it is a banana boat! Need better traction in snow and mud with no serious off roading done, also do heavy towing at times. Thanks for any info. Don.

differential locker?

Welcome to FTE and thank you for taking the time to scroll and find the correct forum for your question. Yes a locking differential will definately increase traction. Depending on the kind you choose though will determine when it will lock. Front and rear lockers are always a plus but it is probably best to have a selectable locker up front. One that you can control on demand such as an air or electric operated locker. Which locker is best I think is up in the air. The Detriot ratchet type locker is tough and has been proven over the years but some people say that it makes too much noise when locking and unlocking. The only locker I have experience with is the previously mentioned but I want to try an electric locker to see how weel it works. The ARB air lockers are supposed to be good but I don't want to have to worry about on board air right now. Maybe later.

differential locker?

You mentioned snow, I've heard Detroit lockers are bad for that, and I can imagine why, as a teenager I drove a welded Chevelle in the Northeast. I do know that they are bad for heavy towing. So the best for you would be probably the electric one when/if they're available if they're not already for your truck. ARB's have been around for awhile, but the electric one sounds like a slicker deal.
Just a rear locker will increase your wheeling dramatically, as 2wd trucks with lockers can go through alot of chit. I'd recommend doing the back first, then you'll see. Be careful of the kind of stuck you can get in a locked truck, it's ALOT more ugly than with an open setup.
