Big big lesson learned. Put this in your bag o tricks. I've had an oil consumption problem twice in the 2.5 years of owning said rig. Thought I was in for an injector rebuild, but all the symptoms weren't there. Lost a gallon of oil in about 70 miles. No issues on start up, no loss of power, no oil burn out the exhaust. Fuel filter isn't black. WTF??? Where is the oil going? Called a local diesel shop. "Change the air filter!!" Huh. Oh yea, the air filter. I've got the 6637 with cover. Didn't look dirty but it was. It was clogged just enough that at power there wasn't enough air to the turbo, so where did the engine get the rest? Out of the crank case, along with some oil. Funny part was, at idle there wasn't any oil coming out the exhaust and the sooting seemed normal. Intake didn't show any abnormal amount of oil either. My truck must be very sensitive to air needs since I didn't think the filter was that dirty. I'm loosing the filter cover so I can monitor it a little better. I sure am happy now. OH 120k on the engine.
I have been thinking of installing a vac guage in the cab of the truck from the inlet of the turbo this was ,hopefully, I will be able to see a difference when the filter needs to be changed.

That's a good idea.
Although it might spook some people because these engines are HEAVY breathers at full boost and even with a new filter it will show some vaccum.
Couldn't you use that filterminder we all have taped up and not using, some of us anyways.. Tap into the turbo inlet tube with a fitting before the turbo, run some harder rubber tubing inside the cab with your filterminder. Seems like a cost effective alternative. Great thread by the way Matt, this could help somebody down the line..

Thanks Dan, not I just have to stop thinking about it ans just do it.
The part that's crazy is that I did a search on here and it seems that I am the only one that this has happened to, and it's happened twice. I really didn't think my filter was that clogged, yea it was pretty dusty but not like that one shown on here a few years ago where they were literally pouring dirt out of the filter, and it still worked. Guess that dust was worse than dirt and it doesn't take much for it to take the path of least resistance, the crank case breather. Air gota come from somewhere.

Installing the FilterMinder into the side of an intake runner will cause a venturi effect to be produced at its inlet, and a resultant false higher reading.

That does not sound good. If you have restriction on the ccv you will get oil leaks.

You need to take a look at Guzzles inatallation, he installes the filterminder in the end of the 6637. It works just like the OEM install.
I have my filter minder tapped into the end of my filter "6637" and it's never moved. Grant it my truck is still stock.
It should work just like the factory set up, if it pulls too much vacuum it will give you a warning light on the instrunent panel. When I had the 6637 on my truck, I wraped a piece of plastic around the air filter and it gave the warning light like it had a dirty filter. I had to reset the filterminder to turn the warning light out. It worked fine. I took the filter off because it was too noisy.

Bob,
We went through this about four or five years ago and by trial-and-error pretty-well proved the venturi effect causing erroneous FilterMinder readings.
