I just changed the tranny oil and filter and it say in the specs. that it takes 10 qts. I got a little past seven and it began to come out the overflow pipe. I warmed the truch up and ran for a few miles, runs great, but the dipstick says there is way to much fluid in there. Do I have to drain some?
If total capacity is 10 quarts you probably drained about 4 & the other 6 stayed in the torque convertor.
Yeah, you need to siphon about 2 quarts out the dip stick tube.
Since so much old oil stayed in the converter, maybe I should take the pan down again, drain the oil which is a little dirty, and start with new oil again. That way maybe as good as a flush.
Most vehicles out there when you do a transmission service, will take about 5 to 7 quarts. Always start by putting in 4 then start it up and run through the gears. DON'T drive it yet. Then check your level and add from there. If it doesn't touch the stick, it will usually take minimum of 1 quart. If its touching the stick, add a half a quart at a time. If its between the low mark and full mark, don't add any. Drive it and get it warm. Then check it again and add from there. Usually if its between the lines, 1 pint will fill it up. Did you make sure you got the right fluid? I also put in Lucas transmission oil additive. I love that stuff.....
on our 2002 EXP its hard to drain the converter. transmission holds aobut 5 quarts. i change the 5 quarts once a year. dont get it all, but your right, "dilution is the solution". Change oil a couple times and your getting a good mix of new fluid into the system.... and you should wipe out the oil pan and clean the magnet and valve body... thats a good oil change. Also, only use MERCON V oil.
