I've been thinking about picking up a good axe to carry in my truck's toolbox this winter. I don't have one anyway, and I figure it wouldn't be a bad idea to have one (might put a small shovel in there too).
I looked at Lowe's, Walmart and Sears. The axes seem to all run around the same price- wally world and sears have them for $25, lowe's cheapest one is $27 and then they have a nice one with a sheath that has a built in sharpening stone for $38 (which seems a little pricey). Wally world's and Lowes are both True Temper.
All of these axes have fiberglass handles...but I don't know about the quality (the True Tempers are all "Made in Indonesia and finished in Vietnam"). I noticed sears has a Truper brand that has a hickory handle, but it doesn't appear to be something I can look at in the store (it's on the website).
What's you guys opinion, where can I look for a good axe?
I have the single edge from Lowes and love it. It had the plastic "sheath" with the built in stone. It was around $40 so probably the same one you saw (handle was red with black insert). I took it and had it professionally sharpened and it has held a good edge through lots of work. It has a good weight and I particularly love the "hook" at the end, no way its slipping out of your gloved hands and turning into a missle (like my 60 yr old oak handled axe has).
