Opinion needed. I bought a used 1996 Ford F150 pickup, straight 6 cylinder, 197,500 km automatic 2 rear wheel drive, body is good shape small little rust on right front fender, passed MVI inspection, had it undercoated last week, 4 new wheel rims cause old ones rusted out, tires look good, changed rad and transmission fluid in it last year, 2 new front brake rotors put on it last year, so I need opinions. I want to haul a trailer about 450 lbs with 650 lb motorcycle on it, haven't bought a trailer yet, I am getting a reese hitch soon but just read an article somewhere that if you're hauling a trailer you need a transmission cooler. I just looked at the truck and can't see a cooler anywhere on it. Do I need one? Is it a big job having one installed?
The factory radiator has a transmission cooler in it. You dont need one if you are towing that light, but like has been said before, the cooler you can keep your tranny the better off it will be. They are pretty cheap and easy to install for the insurance they offer
I put a tranny cooler on every truck I get. They are really simple to install. I think it took me a total of ten-fifteen minutes to install the tranny cooler in my 90 F150 and it really did help my trans significantly.
Heat is the no.1 killer of E4OD transmissions, even if you do not tow anything heavier than that small trailer, get a aux. cooler and never have to be sorry.
