What a day, my body is gonna hurt in the morning. The D44HD on my new 86 was trashed, gears, bearings, and lug studs were all wasted. I had a perfectly good D50 under my parts truck so I swapped them out. I found the easiest way to do it is half an axle at a time. I still have to install the calipers and shocks, gonna swap out the rear hubs as well since those studs are also pretty messed up. Here's some pics of the day.
The pivot bushings on the D50 were in good shape, didn't see any cracking in the rubber so I think they had been replaced before. The donor truck drove super smooth/straight and has plenty of other new parts on the front as well. I didn't swap springs so I do need to change the spring bushings though as they are falling apart. The IDI has some extra springs so I wanted to retain the lift.
I went out tonight to put on the calipers, shocks and stabilizer. As I was jacking up one side, the tire started to chirp as the suspension was still bound up. That leveled out the wheels a bit more so it doesn't look quite as bad. I had to start the truck to turn the wheels for the stabilizer and man it sounds mean. My 93 sounds like crap right now since my DMF is going out, all I hear is sqeaks, rattles, and knocks. Hearing the 6.9 clatter along was sweet, sweet music to my ears.
Yeah, I get to fix it though. I am still retaining ownership on it incase they decide they dont want it. I will be driving it for a while to make sure the bugs are worked out and will also use as a back up for my 93 when I am working on it. I expect it to have some down time since I will be changing the clutch and rebuilding the front end soon.
I'm lucky I have a decent parts truck at least, the 6.9 has been sitting for about a decade so I still have some work to do. I plan to be driving it around next week though. I got my glow plugs(ZD1-A's) today so I can see if it will start on it's own.
