Hey guys new member with a question about my 99 F550 6.8L. I use the truck to pull my 32ft 5th wheel and so it sits most of the time. It’s an automatic and two wheel drive. It’s a great truck but like many of you already know it’s a little short on power especially when pulling steep grades. I’ve heard the 3V engine is much better and responds well to performance modifications. I know it would be expensive to swap out my old motor for a new 3v but if the power gain is there then perhaps it would be worth it. My question is (actually got a lot of them) would the power gain be worth it? If I did the swap what else would need to be changed. What modifications to the 3V would you recommend before it was installed? Could I get similar power from some of the normal modification to the 2V motor?
I have considered both, talked to one of the local parts suppliers and he did not recommend a tuner. He said he’d had seen only 20 to 30hp gain with them. Which tuner did you use? A gear change is also on the table if it gets me what I'm looking for. Not sure what my current gear is thou. The motor is usually running about 2500 at 60 mph so I'm guessing it’s a 3.73.
my camper is 36ft. 9000lbs. i also added a s&b air box from mike. i like it because i can clean the filter and re-use it. i would like to add the big trans cooler that came with the 6.0's i think its a 31 core. its a little pricey @ $400 but i heard its worth it. i also want o add a temp gauge for the tranny.
Hi Haulin550
I suspect your F550 has 4.30 or 4.88 gears already, double check that with a door jam axle code. As already suggested a tuner can help to correct the terrible factory fueling which will help in addition power and torque. I would also look at your exhaust and maybe replace the factory ypipe.
