I'm just wondering what it would take to do this. I know I need different motor mounts and exhaust, but would this bolt up to the current transmission I have for my I6? I'm not sure what kind it is but it is a manual and it is stock.
from what ive been told yes. i was thinking about the same swap but people say a 351 was a better road and to be honest i found some matching 8 lug axles and am now thinking 460
The 300 and the SBF 289,302,351w all have the same trans bolt pattern.
You really should find what trans you have, as you may need to replace it to hold up to that 300 HP. The BW and NP units will hold up good, but the RTS OD and the other OD unit will barely stand up to a 300 stock, more less that 300 HP unit.
im trying to figure mine out, its a 4 spd with reverse on the bottom right stock to an 84 4x4 w/ 300 6. do i need more than that or can someone tell me what i have?
every one tells me the same thing but ive had a few 302's and 300's and the 302's have all felt like they were faster when passing and more power when trashing some rear tires.
If you notice the torque on the 300 is higher than the 302 by 22 ft-lbs.
This makes up the difference in horsepower at the rear wheels.
For example from a dead stop, I can beat a 302 off the line every time. It's only after the 302 gets going that it will be able to pass me by and go faster. Around 1/4 of a mile down the road. This is stock engines with equal rear end ratios.
You might be better off if you changed the rear end ratio of your rear end than changing the engine to a 302. Especially if you got economy gears.
That and you can do some pretty "insane" (cool) upgrades to the 300 to give it even more kick. EFI exaust manifolds for one will do wonders. 4 bb carb upgrades etc... Check all the facts, check all the engine forums here.
Personally I do not feel you will be happy with a stock 302 as a replacement for what you want, for the time and $$ involved.

Yeah I have the upgrades on mine. A Offenhauser Intake and a Holley 4bbl Carb but its still so slow and going up hills it loses power...Ill have to look into 351w.
