Tranny leak problem / question

I was doing some light hauling today (Jeep Grand Wagoneer on a trailer) and when I was done unloading, I noticed a LARGE puddle of fluid under my truck. It was tranny fluid. It seemed to be leaking from the vent in the inspoection cover right behind the engine oil pan. I startd the truck and sure enough a failrly heavy stream of tranny fluid was coming out. Any thoughts? I was doing quite a bit of back and forth trying to get the trailer lined up so I could unload the Jeep, but the tranny temp never rose and I had no issues with power or overheating. I left the truck sit for a while while I got some lunch, came back out and started it again and the stream has reduced to a small drip, still leaking, but only dripping and not running. Any thoughts? What kinds of tranny fluid do we use in our trucks? I have a 2002 F350 7.3 liter crew cab 4 x 4 with auto tranny. Thanks in advance.

Earl

The front seal is leaking. Most likely it got a little hot. There is a better replacement seal available.

Any Mercon or Mercon V fluid will work.

I had that issue the 1st time I brought my 5th wheel home from our 1st trip.. The tranny was already warmed up from a 3 hour trip.. I have to back up a considerable hill & into my driveway.. By the time I got to the top, I was leaving a nice trail of fluid. It was coming out the weep hole like yours was.. I let it cool down, added some fluid & it dripped for a while.. from fluid laying inside I'd assume & then it never leaked again. (well, one other time.. but thats a whole different story !!) From what I have read, our trannys don't like pushing heavy loads up hill & can overheat quickly & I didn't have gauges at the time.. Ever since I have used 4x4 low backing up into my driveway & have never had an issue again.. Lets hope you are that lucky too!!

OK, I am even more confused now, I let the truck sit for several more hours, added about 2 quarts of tranny fluid and some tranny conditioner / stop leak and left it run for 20 minutes. Levels are good, and NO leaking! WTF!!! I wiped the oil pan, the little access cover with the drain hole in it thingy (whatever that cover is called) the transmission pan and not a drop. I drove it home from my parents, about 4 miles, and only a tiny bit of seepeage at the cover and drain hole. Not sure what is up. All the temps were good, they were all at operating temps and no problems!

Yes, I did, just very confused and perplexed. The truck only has 66K on it! I think I need to go drink a beer or 12 and relax a bit!

They are known for leaking out of the front seal when they get hot. No worries. Mine did it too one time, and It sealed itself back up.
Just be glad it did, or you would have to pull the trans to replace it.
IIRC Ponyboy chris had to do that.
Your ok...

Same here mine leaked out the front seal and then sealed itself back up. Unfortunately a couple of months later it started leaking again and I finally got tired of messing with it and had a new seal installed. The new seal is less than $10 its the labor of pulling the tranny and replacing it that costs. If I were you I would not worry about it unless it begins leaking and wont stop.

So where do I get one of these better seals and what kind of money are we talking to have this replaced. Still seeping a bit. Leaving a silver dollar sized spot after sitting overnight. Thanks!

Yup, front T/C seal. I couldn't get mine to stop leaking though so the tranny had to come out to replace it. And I was on vacation when it happened. Not fun. Ed should be able to get you the upgraded seal - it's a Ford part. Or maybe call Brian at BTS, he should know the part number.

You have got to be kidding me! Less than 5.00 and it causes all these problems? Anybody have this replaced and could you tell me what the cost was, ballpark?

It cost me about 5 bucks to change it.

A local tranny guy, might charge a couple of bills to change it. You have check with the shop for rates.
