I'm trying to diagnose why my fuel guage was not working, and got to the point of pulling the sending units. On both units, one of the pickup lines is capped off, which seems wrong to me. Can someone explain if this is right to me? I'm also trying to fihure out if my FSV is working, so maybe this was related? Thanks guys

89 f350 with a 7.3. FSV, Fuel Selector Valve for switching between tanks
Your selector valve is manual. Functions w/ pressure exerted on it by the functioning pump. No effect on sender. If the truck runs off both tanks, it's working. http://stangler.com/motorsports/arti...alve/index.htm

The fuel selector valve has an electric motor inside.
If under the truck you can have some one else switch tanks and you should be able to hear the motor inside the valve run. The selector valve also switches the gauge from one tank to the other as the gauge wires pass through the selector valve.
Not sure what you are meaning by pickup lines.
I do not have a 1989 diagram but here is a 1988 and a 1990 diagram. One of them should be colse to what you have.
By pickup lines I meant the tubes that are at the bottom of the sending unit, that pick up the fuel. I'm not sure of the correct names for them. After looking at them, I did see that the one covered up is the return and it does let fuel flow through.
I have another problem though, both units seem to have lost the piece that goes on the bottom of the tube, it was broken off laying in the bottom of the tank. I can post pics later to better explain it. what was this piece for?

You need to replace the front sending unit and the rear FDM or maybe the selector switch.
You also need to start your own thread to keep things on and even keel.

Do you have a photo of the entire top of the fuel tank?
The parts look a lot like the vapor valve that goes in the top of the tank on other trucks.
The end of the tube is cleaner about 1/2" up the tube like some thing was on it. Maybe a fuel strainer (sock).
The only other thing on the tank is the breather type thing with the vent hose coming off of it. So if it came off of there, its not a critical part of the system then?
