'91 Tie Rod Joint Problem

I have a '91 Explorer, 4WD, 4.0L, A4LD trans.

While turning it sometimes makes a funny noise, kinda like a slight clunk. There is a lot of play in the joint that connects the Tie Rod and the Drag Link. I got these part names from my Hayne's manual and they do not describe the connector (which is like a ball joint) other than to say "cotter pin." Sheesh. Anyway, I could really use some help with the name of the part, how to replace it, and what kind of tool I need to rent/buy.

BTW I just did upper control arms and ball joints on a '97 with torsion bars so I'm already geared up for more ball joints!

Thanks.

Maybe I'm not asking the right question.

Do I need to replace the entire tie rod or just the joint? Do I also need to replace the drag arm too?

Thanks.

Are you talking about the adjusting sleeve? It is connected to both the tie rod, and the link. It has to clamps with bolts on either end?

If you have play there, you should replace all three pieces!

you might have to take a picture of what your talking about. Its either a tie rod, center link, adj sleave, pitman arm, ball joint. Thats all there is under there. So its going to be one of them. I just dont know what your talking about....
