Hey, The wife called me on her way to work, she said the tranny was shifting super hard. I just drove it last night and it was fine. I just wanted to get a heads up before I can go look at it tonght on my way home. What do you think?
The tach sensor is on the injector pump drive gear housing beside the engine oil filler. Looks like a big nut with two wires out of it. If it is bad the tach will be irratic or not working.
However I would think there will be trouble codes stored so may be a good first step to check for them. That is assuming there is nothing obvious like the tach or speedo not working properly.
I did notice the spedo jumped 2 or 3 mph yesterday when I was taking off from a stoplight. It only did it once and that was the first time. I just talked to the wife and she said it also shifted hard slowing down. I will check the wires thank you for your help. You are making me feel better about a tranny rebuild. It was rebuilt by the guy I got it from and it has about 70,000 miles on the rebuild. I will check the wires when I get home tonight. The tack was working sweet though. I don't know about today. Someone said there would be trouble codes, where do I get thoes as it is an early model (no obdII port)
Ford Fuel Injection How To Run a Self-Test Here is how to check for trouble codes. If you don`t have a check engine light (which you may not being a diesel) then wire in a meter or small test light as described. Also ignore the part about KOER and with the KOEO floor the gas pedal during the test otherwise you could get a false TPS code.
You could also get an OBD1 code reader for around $30.00which makes life easier.

Reason: typo
I had my wife's boss take it arround the block to see if he coguld give me any more info. The truck drove like normal. So I am coming to the conclusion that it is that tach sensor. I hate waiting to get off work lol.
Well, It appears I provided the testing info twice (posts #5 & 6), nearly identical posts, pretty sure I only posted the one with the link ... I dunno know!
I took out the sensor and there was some wires showing, but very small, I almost missed it. I orderd the part from ford and it will be in on tuesday. I hope it is the problem
Ok truck was running fine with the new sensor. Went down a 6 mile trail in 1st gear. Looked down the overdrive light was flashing. I put it from 1st to drive and it shifted hard. Turned off the truck then back on. No flashing and shifts fine. What's your next guess?
